Fay Ranch Road - 0.7 miles east of the preserve entrance off of Highway 178 find Fay Ranch Road. Turn left to experience this four mile driving route. Drive slowly but do not block traffic on this country road. Start at the South Fork School; look on both sides of the road in the trees, fields and on the telephone wires for many different species.

Audubon owns the land on the left (westside) of the road just beyond the school and all the way to the end of the forest almost a mile up the road. It then transitions back and forth between Audubon and California Department of Fish & Game (DFG) in the flat land beyond the forest on both sides of the road with a few private parcels on the right.

Passing the cattle guard the paved (and very narrow road) climbs into the gray pine woodland. Beyond here there is a small parcel owned by Audubon with the rest owned by the DFG.

Park along the road in small turnouts and walk the road for a variety of grassland, pine-oak woodland and desert species. The area where there are houses is private but beyond that you again encounter the upper reaches of DFG lands. Access to the DFG lands is limited to the roadside. Please only bird along the road unless special permission has been granted into the preserve or on private land. Turn around and drive back to Highway 178.
