Building a Culture of Conservation at the Kern River Preserve.. Every third Saturday and even some in between except in July and August, our stewardship staff hosts a volunteer work day. Won't you consider joining us to help the small staff keep the preserve the amazing place we all love? Kern River Preserve Volunteer Opportunities KRP - General Workdays - all year long we will be working on the third Saturday. Call (760) 378-2531 or Email regarding work details. Looking for a volunteer opportunity but our volunteer weekends are not convenient? Then contact our Land Steward, Sean Rowe, to sign up to volunteer with the regular work crew. We need to take down thousands of feet of old barbed wire fences over the next six months. While exterior fences will be replaced, many interior fences are no longer needed and are a problem for wildlife movement throughout the preserve. Volunteers Needed for the Following Tasks Repairs to the Visitor Center – this is a building about 100 years old. It serves as our visitor center, office and storage. It needs paint, wood repair, windows replaces and re-caulked. We need capable and experienced carpenter/painters. Upland Restoration Planting – We need someone to take on regular care and maintenance of a couple hundred native upland plants on a solar powers drip system. Drip irrigation repair and operation, planting, weeding, placing protectors and keeping project log book. Spring to Fall. Staff will back you up and supply all materials and instruction. Range Fence modification – we have several miles of range fence that needs to be modified to improve wildlife passage and safety. We will lower top wires, correct wire spacing, remove lower bared ire and replace with smooth. We need people that can work and enjoy remote locations with minimal staff oversight. Grounds Maintenance – Our grounds are the first thing our visitors’ see – we want our guests to have a safe and positive experience. Work entails raking leaves and sticks out of yard. Fill, compact and smooth gopher holes. Remove earth to wood contact around buildings. Weed flowerbeds. Outreach Volunteer - Help maintain and replace as needed flyers, checklists, kiosk items, plan festivals and outreach events, and help maintain website, Facebook, Twitter, and other media for the preserve. VOLUNTEERS are need to help during the following special projects and events: Festival & Preserve information and KRP Friends membership tables at the Naturefest, Reptile Celebration, Hummingbird Celebration, and Fall/Vulture Fest. Nature Trail periodic maintenance. Visitor Center upgrade committee. Sign making for Preserve Headquarters and trails signs. Parking, set-up, take-down, and gopher assistance at the events listed above. Butterfly/Hummingbird Garden installation and periodic maintenance. Volunteer Opportunity - Skilled volunteer painter, electrician carpenter and/or plumber - we will supply materials and a place for you to stay and/or camp. Kern Valley Pride Day, Saturday, September 15, 2012. Join us for our next KV Pride Day and help show the valley what true pride in the natural environment is! We look forward to doing this on an annual basis. We meet at KRP HQ, 7:30 am. Volunteers bring their own gloves, hat, work clothes and canteen. We supply additional drinks, trash bags and a truck and trailer to haul our trash. After we collect our trash, a free BBQ celebration is held at French Gulch Campground at noon. Our focus area is around Hwy 178 and Sierra Way Hwy in and around the preserve and the South Fork Wildlife Area. Audubon Kern River Preserve volunteers and staff have always brought in a respectable amount of trash – in 2002, 2005 and 2006 we gathered the most trash of any team and won first place and came close in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 earning second place those years.
