Books and AppleAudubon Kern River Preserve Education Program: The Kern River Preserve welcomes educational field visits from school and adult groups. Audubon Kern River Preserve has a docent/volunteer corps that, by appointment, hosts several student groups and classes from pre-school through university level each year as well as numerous adult groups. Groups are encouraged to visit the preserve to study, conduct appropriate research, assist on restoration projects, and provide general service work.

We have expertise in the following areas: amphibians & reptiles, avian census techniques, binocular usage, birds, birding, ecological principals (beginning/youth to advanced/adult), hummingbirds, hydrology, native grass restoration, riparian forest restoration, storytelling, Turkey Vultures, and more.

Special Educational Events: The Annual Kern Valley Spring Nature Festival (April), Hummingbird Celebration (August) and Annual Kern Valley Turkey Vulture Festival (September) will be hosted by the Audubon Kern River Preserve. Once again, each festival will have an impressive range and number of interactive educational centers, activities, live animals, and programs for all ages of students from pre-school through adult. Highlights include storytelling and bird banding at the Kern River Preserve,  numerous natural history field trips, and outdoor recreation activities.

BIRD SEED ORNAMENTS

Mix the following ingredients in a bowl:

3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
3-5 tablespoons corn syrup or molasses
4 cups wild bird seed

Roll the mixture to 1/2" thick flat on waxed paper. Using a holiday cookie cutter, cut or mold shapes out of the birdseed mixture. Cut a small hole for hanging and let them dry overnight (12 hours) on each side. Attach to your outside trees with raffia or ribbon.

If the ornaments do not release neatly from the molds, you may need to rinse them in warm water.+
