Audubon Kern Valley Restoration Projects

Mill Field Projects

From 1990 through 2003, the Mill Field next to the A. Brown Flour Mill was planted by volunteers and staff with grants and smaller donations from the Friends of the Kern River Preserve.

Mill Field

This site planted in 1990 by Nature Conservancy staff and volunteers covers many acres of riparian forest vegetation. This site was irrigated for the first several years before the roots of the Fremont Cottonwood and Black Willow reached the ground water.

Mill Pond

One of the first projects conducted by Audubon after the transfer of the property from TNC in 1997. Ten-acres of the Mill Pond area was planted with the help of a generous grant from the Whitecap Foundation in 1998. Wetland and riparian vegetation were planted around this perennial pond near the A. Brown Mill.

In Spring 2003, staff recognized the need for understory diversity and harvested native perennial plants from around the preserve and then planted them under the canopy of these restoration sites. We planted mugwort, wild rose, stinging nettle and mule fat.
