Audubon Kern Valley Restoration Projects

Colt Pasture

Three efforts at replanting the Colt Pasture in 1993, 1998 and 2003 have yielded very different results. Overall around 50-acres have been planted with native grasses, Fremont Cottonwood, mulefat, wild rose, 4-winged saltbush, rubber rabbitbrush, and great basin sagebrush. The sites were planted by staff and volunteers of TNC and then Audubon.

This site is now one of the most important and protected sites for the rare San Emigdio Blue butterfly. It is also home to breeding Summer Tanagers. Turkey Vultures love to roost in the trees of this planting site. If you look at a Google Earth map you can see the letters KRP spelled out in Mule Fat.
