Students Experience the Kern River Preserve

Seventy-seven students from Wallace Middle School learn about Audubon

Weldon, CA – Wallace Middle School from Lake Isabella brought all three of their fifth grade classes to the preserve on Thursday, June 2nd. For many of these students it was their first time visiting the preserve but for all of the students it was the first time visiting our Sprague Ranch section. Due to continued flooding we had to divert the bus to this great but normally off limits location.

Our staff and volunteer coordinator led the students in three groups. Reed Tollefson and Sandra Wieser took a group to Fay Creek to enjoy the water and learn about riparian systems. Sean Rowe and Birdie Foster taught their groups about restoration, solar systems, the turtle headstart project and riparian systems. Alison Sheehey taught her groups about binocular use, beginning bird observation, habitats and then they played in the refreshing water at Fay Creek. All of the students seemed to really enjoy being in a new place out of doors.

We really enjoyed having the classes at the preserve and hope all of the kids have a great summer and come down to the preserve to hike the trails or attend one of our scheduled events.
