Audubon Kern River Preserve manager and local naturalist to co-host natural history cruise down Sacramento River

Weldon, CA – Reed Tollefson and Keith Axelson will be co-hosts on a May 20 natural history and wildlife cruise down the Sacramento River to San Francisco Bay. The 12-hour cruise aboard the WWII Liberty Ship U.S. Jeremiah O’Brien will take passengers down the Sacramento River through Suisun Bay, San Pablo Bay to Pier 45 in Fisherman’s Wharf. Tollefson and Axelson will help passengers with bird identification and discuss the natural history of the Pacific Flyway. One of Tollefson's many interests is American history.

Axelson has been bird watching for over 60 years around the United States and world. He has always advocated for the conservation and protection of birds, wildlife and the natural world. This trip will be not only full of nature but will also be a trip down memory lane for Axelson, he spent time on Liberty Ships during WWII on his way to and from the Pacific theatre as an infantryman in the US Army 81st Infantry Division.

This trip will allow ample time to learn about the war history of the USS Jeremiah O’Brien and the role of Liberty ships in helping to win the Second World War.
