Sprucing up the Sprague

Volunteers sought for Fall project on Audubon Kern River Preserve

Weldon, CA – Once a month from Fall through Spring, volunteers from around the community gather to help on a project at the Audubon Kern River Preserve. Join staff and friends on Saturday, October 16 from 8 a.m. to noon for a weekend volunteer day. This month's project is to spruce up the compound around the Sprague Ranch unit of the preserve.

After purchasing part of the Sprague Ranch in 2005, several revegetation projects have been started around the Sprague Ranch house. We will spend the morning sprucing up the compound around the Sprague House, restoration sites and pond turtle headstart enclosure.

Bring gloves, wear long sleeves and pants, sturdy shoes/boots and safety glasses if you have them. The preserve will supply the tools. Meet at 7:55 a.m. at the Sprague Ranch unit of the Kern River Preserve: 7901 Fay Ranch Road, Weldon, CA. Contact the Kern River Preserve land steward, Sean Rowe or call 760-417-1149 to RSVP.

To find the Sprague Ranch unit of the Kern River Preserve travel to Weldon on Highway 178. Turn left at Fay Ranch Road approximately 2.0 miles east of the t-intersection at Hwy 178 and Sierra Way.  Drive 1.6 miles and turn left onto the dirt road at the hay barn. Meet the crew at the hay barn at 7:55 am. See our maps & directions page if you are coming from outside the immediate area.

The next scheduled volunteer project will be another fun outdoor event - November 20th.
